BUTTERFLY EFFECT
AN ERASMUS PROJECT

EDITORIAL

The concept of the BUTTERFLY EFFECT is that a small action can lead to a chain of events that will modify a pattern already in place. An experience, no matter how small or discreet, can help evolve an idea, a perception, and a point of view of an individual.

Every artistic expression is meant to create a reaction in the individual, which will evolve their perception of a specific point of view, opinion, or idea. The individual, either through direct interaction or through a change in their behaviour, will cause a reaction in their community and therefore in society.

Based on this observation, the partners have decided to create a project that will explore the impact of culture and the arts on society, specifically in the creation of common values and civic engagement, and how they can become the means to bridge intercultural, intergenerational, and social divisions.

This project aims to experiment with different methods to effectively communicate the partners’ common values to event audiences. Additionally, it seeks to share the gathered experiences and knowledge with peers through presentations and documentation while also focusing on enhancing capacity building, improving work quality and incorporating new practices.

THE IDEA THAT STARTED IT ALL

“It has been said that something as small as the flutter of a butterfly’s wing can ultimately cause a typhoon halfway around the world.”

THE TWO FIELDS OF ACTION OF THE PROJECT

CAPACITY BUILDING

What is capacity building?

Capacity building refers to the process of developing and enhancing the skills, abilities, resources, and commitments necessary for individuals, organisations, and communities to effectively manage challenges, meet goals, and achieve sustainable results. This concept contains a wide range of activities designed to strengthen performance and enable self-sufficiency.

John Gaventa, Director of Research of the Institute of Development Studies (IDS) states that

“Capacity building is about individual and collective empowerment, enabling individuals to realise their full potential and contribute effectively to their organisations and communities.”

The BUTTERFLY EFFECT project focuses on capacity building by exploring innovative methods to convey important values such as civic engagement, inclusion, and diversity. Through activities like presentations, documentation, and knowledge sharing, the project facilitates the exchange of best practices and lessons learned among participating organisations. This collaborative effort not only benefits the participants but also their peers in the cultural sector, ensuring that valuable insights are widely disseminated and promoting a broader understanding and application of effective strategies to foster civic values.

A key aspect of the project is enhancing the quality of work within participating organisations through job shadowing and hands-on experiences, enabling participants to gain new skills and insights. Transnational meetings and collaborative activities offer opportunities for team members to learn from each other and develop new approaches. The project also provides professional development opportunities to keep staff and volunteers updated with the latest trends and practices in the cultural sector. Emphasising thorough documentation and evaluation, the project generates valuable resources like a handbook and a website, while using various evaluation tools to measure effectiveness and impact. Overall, the project aims to improve organisational capabilities, foster continuous learning, and promote civic engagement and shared values through cultural events.

THE SURVEY

The survey component of the BUTTERFLY EFFECT project is essential for evaluating how cultural events can promote civic engagement and common values like inclusion and diversity. This survey is conducted during the OPEN BUZLUDZHA festival in Bulgaria, organized by the Buzludzha Project Foundation. The festival provides an excellent opportunity to study the influence of cultural activities on participants’ civic behaviours and attitudes.

The survey targets a wide range of festival attendees to collect detailed quantitative data on their perceptions and experiences. Participants are asked to fill out questionnaires that explore their understanding of the festival’s goals, their views on civic engagement, and how the event has inspired them to participate in civic activities. The survey also measures how well the festival promotes values of inclusion and diversity.

The collected data are carefully analyzed to identify trends and insights into the effectiveness of cultural events in fostering civic values. The findings are compiled into a final handbook, which serves as a useful resource for other cultural professionals and organizations. This handbook will offer evidence-based recommendations and best practices for using cultural events to encourage civic engagement. Additionally, the survey results are shared on the project’s website and through various dissemination activities, making the knowledge accessible to a broader audience. By evaluating the impact of the OPEN BUZLUDZHA festival, the survey helps to understand how cultural initiatives can drive social change and create a more engaged and inclusive society.
